This monumental staircase connects the Michel Ange gallery to the Paintings rooms on the first floor of the Denon wing. Started around 1850 as part of the developments initiated by Napoleon III, the work was not completed until 1914.

Consisting of painted and gilded stucco, oculi of mirrors and glass as well as a painted ceiling, its decoration was very dirty. Qualified restorers lead a vast project which made it possible to draw up a report of the complete state of the whole then to undertake interventions of dusting and cleaning.
