Louvre Chair 2022 - The Far East at the Louvre: the museum's cross-views of Asia 5/5
Louvre Chair 2022: “Ghosts of the Louvre. The disappeared museums of the 19th century” by Pierre Singaravélou professor of contemporary history at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and King’s College London.
The Far East at the Louvre: Perspectives of the Museum on Asia and Asian visitors on the Museum's collections
(Louvre Auditorium), 12/16/2022 at 7 p.m.
From its opening in 1793, the Louvre was intended for two well-identified audiences: artists and foreigners. Visitors from Asia, especially distinguished diplomatic guests, were numerous throughout the 19th century. This conference will propose to approach the Museum and its history through the point of view of the Indian Mirza Aboul Taleb Khan, the Nepalese Jung Bahadur Rana, the Filipino José Rizal, the Siamese Chulalongkorn or the Chinese Chen Jitong to understand how the Louvre attempted to address the world and how its message may have been received. It will parallel the view of these Asian visitors on the museum's collections with that of the museum on Asia through the exhibition of Indian, Chinese and Japanese objects. At the crossroads of these different receptions, the question arises of the universality of its discourse: to whom can the Museum speak?
